VinylPlus raises the bar by registering over 440,000 tonnes of recycled PVC in Europe in 2013

Summary by Billy Chan

VinylPlus, the sustainable development programme of the European PVC industry, successfully registered a record of nearly 444,470 tonnes of recycled PVC last year. This is on track to the target of recycling 800,000 tonnes yearly by 2020.

In 2013, ‘legacy additives’ were found in recycled PVC; subsequently, VinylPlus made significant effort to address this serious challenge for the industry because these substances potentially reduce PVC recycling quantities. The efforts brought encouraging results of a decrease of 81.4% in the used of lead-based stabilisers in the EU-27 compared to 2007 levels. The commitment will also be extended to the EU-28 this year.
